Volunteer

With no paid staff, the Friends of the Chapel Hill Public Library is dependent on many volunteers to carry out activities in support of the Library.

No matter how much time a volunteer has available – from a few hours a year to several hours a week – there is a great opportunity for you! Contact us with any questions about volunteer opportunities.

Ways to Help

Book Store
Volunteers are needed to sell books in the store and must commit to a minimum of one 3-hour shift per month on an ongoing basis. Training requires one 3-hour orientation shift followed by one or two additional shifts to practice learned skills. Scheduling is creative to accommodate volunteer availability. The Book Store is open 7 days a week from
10:30 – 4:30 or noon – 6:00.

Book Sales
Book sales occur three weekends a year in April, September, and December and volunteers are needed from Thursday through Sunday for each sale.  Volunteer opportunities include loading, moving and unloading boxes; arranging books on tables in the sale rooms; tallying purchases at checkout; and keeping rooms orderly during the sale. More information on specific volunteer opportunities and scheduled shift times are sent out to volunteers for sign up prior to each sale.

Book Sorting
Volunteers work for several hours on Wednesday and/or Friday mornings. Donations are moved from the Library’s receiving room to the Friends sorting room, unpacked and arranged for scanning, sorted and shelved by category, and boxed for the next Book Sale. The ability to lift boxes of books is a plus.

Communications & Marketing
Volunteers help develop and/or maintain an effective communications and marketing strategy. Social media and/or computer graphic skills are a plus.

Events
Events are planned throughout the year to increase the visibility of the Friends and to promote membership. These events include the April and December Book Sale Sip & Shop evenings, the Fall Raffle, and the Annual Membership Lunch & Program. Volunteers are needed to plan, organize and/or staff these and other events throughout the year.

Finance & Governance
Volunteers may be needed to provide financial, legal or board governance experience in either a committee or a Board role

Membership
Volunteers may be needed to provide data entry, management and reporting using web-based or spreadsheet-based software.
