Volunteer

The Friends of Chapel Hill Public Library is a volunteer-only organization and we rely on many volunteers to manage all aspects of our operation. If you are interested in volunteering please fill out the form below and share your volunteer activity interests, relevant skills or experience, and availability. We receive many volunteer requests. While we are always in need of volunteers for our three Big Book Sales, we have much more limited volunteer opportunities for other activities and prioritize requests based on the specific needs of each committee.

Volunteering for the Book Sale is a great way for all volunteers to connect with the Friends! Feel free to contact us with any questions.

Volunteer Opportunities

Book Sales
Book sales occur three weekends a year in April, August, and December and volunteers are needed from Thursday through Sunday for each sale. Volunteer opportunities include loading, moving and unloading boxes; arranging books on tables in the sale rooms; tallying purchases at checkout; and keeping rooms orderly during the sale. More information on specific volunteer opportunities and scheduled shift times are sent out to volunteers for sign up several weeks prior to each sale. Book sales provide the best opportunity for volunteers to engage with the Friends.

Book Sorting
Volunteers work for a couple of hours on specified weekday mornings. Donations are moved from the Library’s receiving room to the Friends sorting room, unpacked and arranged for scanning, sorted and shelved by category, and boxed for the next book sale. Limited new volunteer opportunities are available and subject to the needs of sorting room management.

Communications & Marketing
Volunteers help develop and/or maintain an effective communications and marketing strategy. Experience with web-based software and social media is preferred.

Events
Events are scheduled throughout the year to increase the visibility of the Friends and promote membership, including the December Book Sale Sip & Shop, Annual Membership Lunch & Program, and Annual Raffle or Auction. Volunteers are needed to plan, organize and staff these and other events.

Finance & Legal
Volunteers may be needed to provide financial or legal experience in either a committee or a Board role. Please let us know if you have this experience.

Membership
Volunteers with good computer skills are needed to maintain the membership database and respond to membership inquiries.

Book Store - Pick Up & Cart Sales
Volunteers sign up for 2 hour shifts to deliver Online Book Store orders, sell books and promote the Friends. Pickup occurs on Thursdays and Saturdays from 11:00 to 1:00 and volunteers need to arrive by 10:45 to set up and allow an extra 15 minutes to take down.

Book Store - Inventory
Volunteers select, upload and maintain online bookstore inventory and process orders. Limited new volunteer opportunities are available and subject to the needs of inventory management.
