Volunteer

With no paid staff, the Friends of the Chapel Hill Public Library is dependent on many volunteers.  Some of our traditional volunteer activities have been changed or curtailed during the pandemic but we are always seeking ways to match our needs with your volunteer interests and experience.  Please be sure to share any skills or experience that relate to your area(s) of interest!

Volunteer opportunities range from a few times a year to several hours a week.  Feel free to contact us with any questions.

Ways to Help

Online Book Store
Volunteers sign up for shifts to process and deliver online book orders in the Library. Processing occurs on Tuesdays and Fridays and order pickup occurs on Thursdays and Saturdays. Regular sign up is necessary to maintain familiarity with both inventory shelving procedures and the online software used for both processing and delivering orders on iPads.

Book Sales
Book sales occur three weekends a year in March, August, and December and volunteers are needed from Thursday through Sunday for each sale.  Volunteer opportunities include loading, moving and unloading boxes; arranging books on tables in the sale rooms; tallying purchases at checkout; and keeping rooms orderly during the sale. More information on specific volunteer opportunities and scheduled shift times are sent out to volunteers for sign up prior to each sale.

Book Sorting
Volunteers usually work for several hours one morning a week. Donations are moved from the Library’s receiving room to the Friends sorting room, unpacked and arranged for scanning, sorted and shelved by category, and boxed for the next Book Sale. The ability to lift boxes of books is a plus.

Communications & Marketing
Volunteers help develop and/or maintain an effective communications and marketing strategy. Familiarity with web-based software and social media and/or computer graphic skills are preferred.

Events
Events are scheduled throughout the year to increase the visibility of the Friends and to promote membership. Events include the December Book Sale Sip & Shop, Annual Membership Lunch, raffles, and membership promotions. Volunteers are needed to plan, organize and/or staff these and other events.

Finance & Governance
Volunteers are needed to provide financial, legal or board governance experience in either a committee or a Board role. Please let us know if you have this experience.

Membership
Volunteers with strong computer skills are needed to help maintain membership records and pull various reports using web-based or spreadsheet-based software.
